Dawson County didn't need a trick play to open the game last week, the middle school Tigers used the hardcore running by running back Coey Watson to capture the Mountain League Championship with a 28-20 defeat of Pickens on Oct. 3 in Jasper.
The season all comes down to one game. Coach Benjy Edwards' Dawson County middle school football team will travel to Pickens County High School Thursday to play for the North Georgia Mountain League Championship against the middle school program from Pickens County.
After several weeks of practice the Dawson County middle school football program is gearing up for its first game Thursday. The team will host the Pickens County middle school team at Sandy Walls Stadium.
The middle school softball team for Dawson County opened the season with a heartbreaking 7-3 loss at Lumpkin County on Tuesday, but bounced back to defeat Pickens County Middle by an 11-3 score on Friday.
The combined middle school football teams have been busy with workouts over the last two weeks at Dawson County Middle School. This will be the first year that both schools have been combined entering the season.
In what is being billed as both a cost-saving and competitive measure, Dawson County and Riverview middle schools will combine their football, softball and wrestling programs, as well as their football cheerleading squads.

The Dawson County High School football staff is offering a six-week training program for middle school athletes that will include an introduction to the Dawson County offense, defense and special teams, Tiger training regimen and modern speed, power and agility training. The program is designed for upcoming seventh and eighth graders.
