Dawson County Parks and Recreation held its annual Volunteer Coaches Appreciation Banquet last week at Rock Creek Sports Complex. The ceremony, now in its fifth year, aims to honor the achievements of the volunteers that make the programs offered by parks and recreation successful.
Dawson County Park and Recreation's youth wrestling team, the John Wayne Corcoran Wrestling Association, had 20 wrestlers compete in 23 weight classes at the Dahlonega Goldmine tournament at Lumpkin County High School on Saturday. Kincaid Schuette won tournament champion in the 8 and under, 65 pound weight class after wrestling his way through a 13 man bracket with two pins and a tech fall.
Dawson County cheerleaders, led by coach Keely Amos, took part in two camps at Rock Creek Park last week. The camps were designed to give future cheerleaders of Dawson County a glimpse into what it is like to be a cheerleader at the middle school and high school level.
Three members of the Dawsonville Racers swim team competed well at the state park and recreation meet in Tifton last weekend. Aidan Kudlas captured second place in the 25-yard breast stoke in the 8 and under division. Kudlas qualified for the state meet with a runner-up finish in the breast stroke and the 100-yard IM at the district meet earlier this month.
The Dawsonville Racer swim team participated in the District 7 meet in Clarkesville on July 16. Three Dawsonville swimmers qualified for the state meet that will be held July 19-20 in Tifton. Going to state are Lauren Dare, Brooke Dare and Aidan Kudlas.
The Dawsonville Racer swim team competed in a meet at Dacula on June 23. "I thought everyone did great and I was really proud of them," said head coach Stephanie Morgan.
The Dawsonville Racer swim team competed in a meet in Habersham County on Saturday. The girls' team had a strong showing and finished in fifth place out of nine teams.
The Dawson County 9-10 girls' basketball team won the GRPA District 7 Basketball Championship over the weekend to earn a spot in the state tournament. A win over Union County on Feb. 25 clinched the berth.
Dawson County Parks and Recreation is proud to announce the results of the 2011 North Georgia Youth Football Association Super Bowl. For the first time ever Dawson County's youth football program was well represented with four teams earning spots in the association's Super Bowl.
Kick-off the fall sports season at the inaugural Fall Sports Pep Rally hosted by Dawson County Parks and Recreation Aug. 19. Combined with August movie night, the fun-filled event will be held at the Veterans Memorial Park football field beginning at 6 p.m.
The Dawsonville Racers swim team competed at the North Georgia Swim League District 7 meet July 9. According to the team's coach the entire team saw improvements. The event was held at the Ruby Fulbright Aquatic Center in Clarkesville.
The Dawson County Dizzy Dean 7-year old All-Star team was eliminated from state tournament play recently in Canton. The team, coached by Billy Smith, won its first game of the tournament against Hall County before losing its next two games to Hobgood and Ringgold to put them out of the double elimination tournament.
The Dawsonville Racers competed in a swim meet June 25 in Dacula. Several girls had great showings at the meet, especially in the older age groups.
Two Dizzy Dean All-Star teams from Dawson County are going to state. The 7-year-old and 8-year-old teams will represent the county at their respective state tournaments in July.
Four teams from Dawson County played in the Dizzy Dean All-Star softball District 6 tournament June 16-18. The tournaments were played at various locations, based on age. The 9-10 girls softball team, coached by Natosha Beary, finished in third place in Jefferson.
