Maybe it’s time to go through the change

I've noticed a few things lately about myself. When I say I need to drop a few pounds, forgoing my daily candy bar and glass of wine doesn't cause the scales to nudge south.

Indoor cockroach control

One insect that is universally loathed is the cockroach. I have learned to appreciate most insects, but cockroaches still give me the creeps. In nature, they are important decomposers. They are attracted to our homes in search of food, moisture and shelter.

A girl shouldn’t miss out on the power of the sisterhood

Mama, for the most part, has always been right about just about everything. Don't dare tell her that, or I will never hear the end of it.

Squirrel migration

Driving around Dawson and Lumpkin counties recently, I couldn't help but notice the unusual amount of dead squirrels lying all over the road. It seems like I can't drive a mile without seeing a "road kill" squirrel or having one dart into my path, pause, jump and shoot off in another direction. We have received many calls at the extension office from folks who have lived here their entire lives and can't remember seeing anything like this before.

It’s time for pansies

Pansies are the quickest and easiest way to add color to a dull fall landscape. They are a hardy winter annual native to Europe, and most likely a hybrid of Johnny Jump-up flowers. Millions of pansies are grown each year for the Georgia market, and with more than 300 varieties to choose from, you will most certainly find a pansy color to suit your taste.

No reason to stay friends with ex’s family after divorce

By nature, I am not a jealous person. Never have been, and don't really see that changing in the future. I believe it to be a supremely petty emotion and the only thing that has ever given me a near pang has been a sassy pair of shoes I spotted on a lady once.

Time for fall garden chores

It has been a rough year for many gardeners. Record amounts of rainfall made vegetable gardening extremely difficult. If you were lucky enough to get seeds to germinate, fungal leaf spots were rampant due to plant leaves being constantly damp.

Granny’s stunt is the definition of evil

When I was a little girl, Granny took me to most of the birthday parties. Mama was usually working and truth be told, I think Granny liked them. She was able to get in everybody's business right there in their own home - they not only invited her in, they gave her a plate of cake and ice cream with a cup of punch.

Plant fescue in fall

Most people associate fall with falling leaves and cooler weather, but it is also the perfect time to rejuvenate your cool-season turfgrass. October is the prime month for planting or re-seeding tall fescue lawns.
