Dawsonville man among hall of fame semifinalists

A Dawsonville man is among 15 semifinalists for the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame's 2012 class of inductees.

The winner of more than 200 NHRA, IHRA and AHRA sanctioned drag racing events, Dick Brannon was directly involved in the development of the Ford 427 race engines and played an important role in development of the 1967 Ford Fairlane 427, including one in which Mario Andretti won the Daytona 500.

Local earns national honors on rifle team

Dawsonville native Mattie Brogdon, a senior on the Texas Christian University rifle team, garnered national attention when she received All-American honors in March.

The young markswoman was named to the 2012 National Rifle Association's All-Americans Smallbore Second Team and received an Air Rifle Honorable Mention.

Tourney raises funds

Rotarians and their guests took to the greens May 7 for the group's 20th annual golf tournament at Crystal Falls Golf Club.

The team of Eric White, Eddie Register, Devon West and Charles White were the first place gross winners in the four-man scramble.

Gilreath named pitcher of week

Former Dawson County High School baseball player Chase Gilreath has been named Pitcher of the Week for Columbus State for the week ending Feb. 28.

The Cougars play in the Peach Belt Conference.

Racing legend to compete in Daytona

Bill Elliott announced last week a partnership that will put the 1988 Cup champion from Dawsonville behind the wheel of a blue No. 50 Walmart-sponsored Chevy in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway in July.

The retail giant unveiled the Legends of Racing venture as part of its 50th anniversary celebration last week during the annual Sprint Media Tour in Charlotte.

Dawson moves up in classification

THOMASTON - After rescinding a measure that would have allowed schools to deduct special needs students from the enrollment counts, the Georgia High Schools Association passed its reclassification of member schools Monday morning.

With the state moving to a six-classification system, big changes are in store for some local schools.

There will be a packed house for Friday night's Georgia Racing Hall of Fame Induction ceremony.

Native coaches all-star game

Dawson County native Stuart Chester had the opportunity to coach some of the nation's best young baseball players recently in the ninth annual Perfect Game All-American Classic at PETCO Park in San Diego, Calif.

The East versus West matchup Aug. 14 featured 38 of the nation's most promising high school players.

Young driver making name for himself

With more than 500 feature go-cart victories and more than 40 championships, 12-year-old Spencer Davis has established himself as a winning driver before he's old enough to get a license.

This season, the Dawsonville resident moved up to late-model trucks, where his winning ways haven't missed a beat.

Holbrook breaking records

Former Dawson County Lady Tiger golfer Kasay Holbrook had a great junior year at Presbyterian College last season. A 2008 Dawson County High School graduate, Holbrook has set or broke several Blue Hose records during her 3-year career at the Clinton, S.C. school.

Holbrook played in 10 tournaments this past season for Head Coach Thomas Addison.

NFL career kicks off

Dawson County High graduate and former University of Tennessee punter Chad Cunningham has signed a free-agent contract with the Tennessee Titans.

Cunningham went undrafted in April, but said that he believed he would get a shot with an NFL team.

New team in town

There is another football team in town. Atlanta Sports Academy, located on the campus of the former Southern Catholic College in Gold Creek, recently began football conditioning and practice.

Players from all over the United States and Canada recently moved into the dorms on the school's campus.

Preparing for college

On a sweltering Saturday morning 60 plus football players took to the field at Veterans Memorial Park in Dawsonville. They were there to participate in a joint effort by Beyond Sports Network and Atlanta Sports Academy to evaluate players for college and beyond.

The combine was structured as a National Football League type experience.
