A Camp Frank D. Merrill soldier was killed on Camp Wahsega Road Saturday afternoon in Dahlonega when the vehicle he was traveling in left the roadway and plowed backwards into a tree, said officials with Georgia State Patrol.

Pfc. Robert Bruce Giffen III, 19, reportedly died on the scene after the Toyota Scion piloted by Dawsonville resident Jarrett William Ball, 20, came to a rest at a sharp turn near Miles Berry Road.

Ball and his front-seat passenger Daniel Matzke, 19 of Dahlonega were both severely injured in the accident.

Ball could face charges stemming from the accident, said officials.

"The driver over-corrected, causing the vehicle to rotate around," said Robin Stone of the Georgia State Patrol. "... It traveled over a culvert and backward across a private drive."

A call to emergency officials went out around 5:45 p.m. but Giffen, who was in the backseat, had already died at the scene by the time a nearby deputy had arrived, said Investigator Chris Pfrogner of the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office.

Ball was rushed to Northeast Georgia Medical Center and Matzke was taken to Atlanta Medical Center.

An official report lists speed as a possible contributing factor in the accident.

"The driver's vehicle at the time of the crash was exceeding the posted speed limit," said Stone.

The results of the GSP investigation will determine whether or not Ball will face charges for the accident.

"They will make the determination based on those findings," said Stone.

She added that there is no indication that the use of drugs or alcohol played in factor in the accident.
