A Gilmer County teen was killed in a fiery crash Tuesday afternoon when his car ran off the road in northwestern Dawson County, hit a tree and ignited in flames.
Georgia State Patrol spokeswoman Robin Stone said Caleb Christopher Millwood, 19, of Ellijay died at the scene, though efforts were made by witnesses and emergency personnel to revive him.
Witnesses were able to free him from the burning SUV after cutting his seatbelt. A doctor on scene performed CPR, according to Stone.
She said Millwood was traveling on Hwy. 52 near Antioch Church Road when he veered off the roadway, overcorrected and lost control. The car then slammed into two trees before coming to a rest and igniting in flames.
The teen was entrapped and unresponsive when witnesses pulled him from the burning car.
He was in critical condition for nearly an hour as first responders attempted to stabilize him for transport.
The death marks the first roadway fatality in Dawson County this year, Stone said.
