Local charity Veterans 3 Gun and the North Georgia Crappie Anglers are hosting a fall fishing tournament, Fishing with Military Heroes, on Saturday, Nov. 17.

The tournament will honor all veterans who have experienced physical or emotional trauma. The tournament will take place on Lake Lanier and the group is accepting the first 100 participants that sign up.

Lines will go in the water at daylight and the weigh in will be at Bolding Mill Park in Gainesville at 1 p.m. followed by an awards ceremony and lunch. Prizes will be awarded for the largest crappie and seven largest crappie. Only 10-inch fish will be kept by each angler for weigh in.

Lunch for participants and family will be provided by Clear Comm.

Participants do not need to know how to fish as members will be on hand to teach and help participants have a great experience. Participants also do not need to have a license, tackle or bait as a member of the North Georgia Crappie Anglers Club will furnish the fishing supplies and boats and accompany each participant. Disabilities will be accommodated.

Veterans 3 Gun is a Dawsonville-based charity that works to engage veterans in competitive shooting sports and raise awareness of the high rate of suicides in the veteran and military community.  The organization reports that an estimated 22 veterans commit suicide each day.
