The Dawson County Civitan Club's inaugural motorcycle ride planned for Saturday has been postponed due to the threat of rain storms.
Ride for A Reason, a deputy-escorted ride through the Appalachian foothills in Dawson County, will be rescheduled at a later date.
"It's called Ride for A Reason - the reason being to support those in our community that have needs, whether they are physical disabilities or developmental disabilities," said Civitan Club President Lisa Perry.
The Dawson County club is an arm of Civitan International, an organization designed to support and help research for and provide help to individuals with disabilities in their local communities.
"We've done projects ranging from the Christmas gift bags for senior citizens to helping sponsor a Valentine's dance for special needs students and adults to our Miss Sparkle pageant for special needs young ladies to supporting the Special Olympics," Perry said.
"These are only our projects from the first year. We are hoping to sustain those and add projects as we move into our second year. The funds from the motorcycle ride will help fund those."
Perry said that the idea for a ride to help keep up the other events came after some brainstorming with the rest of the Civitan board.
"There are plenty of good 5K runs, but we wanted to do something different," she said. "There are a few motorcycle rides, but we wanted to have one that became an annual event that supports something here in our community."
All funds raised by the club go toward supporting community members with disabilities.
"This event is open to anyone," Perry said. "We want everyone to come out and support Dawson County citizens who may need a little bit of extra help."
