One woman died this past weekend after being hit by a car along the Ga. 400 corridor in Dawson County.
Kristina Ann Cates, 47, Dahlonega, died on Dec. 18 after a car struck her while she was walking along the state highway.
Before the crash, Cates had experienced homelessness. She was known to frequent the commercial strip along Ga. 400 in Dawson County.
The crash was reported at 8:17 p.m., and a trooper from the Georgia State Patrol arrived on scene nine minutes later, according to an agency report.
The report states that when the accident occured, a car was traveling north in the right turn lane from Ga. 400 onto Beartooth Parkway. Cates dropped something on the road and bent down to pick it up when the car hit her.
Cates succumbed from her injuries before EMS arrived on scene. Commuters in the area considered Cates a kind, polite woman.
“What we loved most about our mom was her free spirit and selfless nature,” said daughter Hanna Frederick. “She told me she would rather go without if it meant someone else didn’t have to.”
No charges have been filed against the driver of the vehicle.
