A high wind warning is now in effect for areas of north Georgia including Dawson County, according to the National Weather Service.
This warning is in effect from 7 p.m. tonight until 7 a.m. Wednesday., the NWS alert stated.
Separate wind advisories are also in effect now until 7 p.m. tonight and from 7 a.m. to. 7 p.m. Wednesday.
“Be sure that you have a way to be alerted of Warnings while you're asleep tonight! Use a weather radio and/or ensure that Emergency Alert System (EAS) notifications are enable on your phone,” the NWS’ Peachtree City office said in a Tuesday social media post. “Remember – outdoor warning sirens are only intended to be heard if you are OUTDOORS.”
People are encouraged to secure any loose items that could be blown by wind and to take extra caution if driving during the windy weather.
Winds of 15-20 mph are predicted this afternoon and early evening, with gusts of up to 40 mph. Then, starting later this evening, the area could experience winds of 20-30 mph, with gusts of up to 55 mph.
Thunderstorms are expected to roll through the area in the early morning hours Wednesday.
Throughout much of Wednesday, winds could range between 15-25 mph , with gusts of up to 45 mph in the area.
This could lead to damaged trees and power lines. Power outages are also expected, according to the NWS.
“If storms cause power outages, our line crews will take all necessary precautions before they go to work on any downed power lines,” Amicalola EMC stated in a Tuesday Facebook post.
