High wind warning issued for Dawson County
Thunderstorm

A high wind warning is now in effect for areas of north Georgia including Dawson County, according to the National Weather Service.

This warning is in effect from 7 p.m. tonight until 7 a.m. Wednesday., the NWS alert stated.

Separate wind advisories are also in effect now until 7 p.m. tonight and from 7 a.m. to. 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The National Weather Service clarified that some of the potentially damaging winds expected are not associated with the line of incoming storms.

“In addition to the line of thunderstorms that could bring damaging winds to north and central Georgia tonight into tomorrow (Wednesday) morning, gusty non-thunderstorm winds are expected. These winds will be strongest in the north Georgia mountains (up to 55 mph),” an updated NWS post stated.

The NWS also encouraged people to have a way to be alerted of any weather warnings that may be issued tonight and tomorrow.

People should also secure any loose items that could be blown by wind and to take extra caution if driving during the inclement weather, NWS posts added.

Winds of 15-20 mph are predicted this afternoon and early evening, with gusts of up to 40 mph. Then, starting later this evening, the area could experience winds of 20-30 mph, with gusts of up to 55 mph.

Thunderstorms are expected to roll through the area in the early morning hours Wednesday.

Throughout much of Wednesday, winds could range between 15-25 mph , with gusts of up to 45 mph in the area.

This could lead to damaged trees and power lines. Power outages are also expected, according to the NWS.

“If storms cause power outages, our line crews will take all necessary precautions before they go to work on any downed power lines,” Amicalola EMC stated in a Tuesday Facebook post.
