Local emergency shelter plans are moving forward as a winter storm set to bring ice and snow bears down on the area, Dawson County Emergency Services announced Thursday.
The Amicalola Falls State Park Visitor Center, located at 280 Amicalola Falls State Park Rd., is serving as an emergency shelter, according to DCES’ Jan. 9 Facebook post.
Amicalola Falls State Park is in northwestern Dawson County.
If there are power outages, Cornerstone Church will open as an emergency warming center, according to DCES.
Cornerstone Church is located at 236 Etowah River Road, just off Highway 53.
The emergency shelter at the church is preparing to open as local partners work to get the necessary resources and people in place, according to a Thursday email Dawson County Family Connection‘s Layla McBrayer sent local officials.
Dawson County Family Connection will post more specifics on the shelter’s opening, arrival, cut-off and departure times on its Facebook page as soon as possible if the emergency shelter opens, McBrayer stated in the email.
“With the expected weather arriving in the early morning hours, please do not get out unless absolutely necessary due to the possibility of snow and ice, which could make the roads dangerous,” the DCES post stated.
“Just remember that if this winter storm hits as predicted, the conditions will be very dangerous,” the DCES post added. “The best course of action is to stay at home, warm and safe but if you must get out, use extreme caution.”
