The Dawson County High School varsity wrestlers traveled to Blue Ridge Jan. 20 for a tri-match with host Fannin County and Towns County. The Tigers came away with victorious with a 54-21 win over Fannin County and a 48-33 victory over Towns County.
The score was tied 18-18 against Fannin County until a pin by Jeremy Whalen (145-pounds) made the score 24-18. Dawson County then won the next five matches to take a comfortable victory.
Winning by way of pin against the Rebels were: Justin Evans (113-pounds), Taylor Cronin (160-pounds), Caine Wells (170-pounds), Gavin Brown (182-pounds), Brendan Capps (220-pounds) and Ty Williams (heavyweight).
Picking up points by way of decision were Quade Buytendorp 7-2 (126-pounds) and Josh Poe 6-2 (132-pounds).
Against Towns County the Tigers trailed 9-0 before a forfeit (worth six points) was picked up by Quade Buytendorp (126-pounds) and Josh Poe (132-pounds), that pulled Dawson County ahead 12-9.
Brown (182-pounds) also picked up a forfeit solidly giving the Tigers a 36-24 advantage.
Pinning their Indian opposition were: Harrison Adams (138-pounds), Jeremy Whalen (145-pounds), Gilbert Pruitt (152), Brett Whalen (195) and Williams (heavyweight).
Coach Arron Haynes' team will participate in the Area Traditional Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Lumpkin County High School.
