The Dawson County Middle School softball team picked up its first win of the season with a 2-0 defeat of cross-county rival Riverview on Friday.

Head coach Jessie Crane's Lady Tiger team scored two runs in the first inning on a walk by Mahlia Billingsley and hits by Natalie Glass and Sydney McGinnis. Another walk by Kaila Billingsley helped drive in the two runs during the Sept. 21 game.

It was the only runs Dawson County needed to come away with the win.

Both teams played terrific defense, but Riverview just couldn't find a way to score.

Head coach Jeff Compton's team had bases loaded in the fourth inning with no outs.

A line drive to second and an alert throw doubled up the runner at first base for two outs.

A ground ball to Glass ended the inning without a run scoring.

Both pitchers did great.

Natalie Glass for Dawson County picked up the win. Glass had eight strike outs and four walks.

Lady Eagle pitcher Ashton Bruce, after the first inning, settled down to mow down nine Dawson County batters and gave up only four walks.

"I am very proud of our girls," Crane said. "They deserve this for all the hard work they have been putting in at practice. I thought Natalie Glass pitched a great game. We finally hit the ball and our defense played great. Our defense made good things happen for us. It was a big win going into the tournament next weekend."

It was Dawson County's first softball win in two years.

"The Eagles played a good game. However, we were unable to score against the Tigers. They played a great game. I am proud of the performance of the Eagles. We will be ready for next weekend during the tournament."

The Mountain League tournament begins Friday with the championship game taking place on Saturday. Games will be played at Roper Park in Jasper.

Tournament seeding and game times had not been announced as of press time.
